Drain lines here fight two things that plumbers in wetter, softer-water regions do not deal with the same way.

The first is mineral scale. Very hard water leaves deposits on the inside of drain lines just as it does on the supply side, and over decades that buildup narrows the effective diameter of a cast iron or older drain. A line that started at three inches and is now functionally two and a half catches everything that passes.

The second is what grows above it. Established landscaping means mature roots, and in a desert environment a leaking sewer joint is the most attractive moisture source for a considerable distance. Clay joints shift in caliche soil; roots find the gap.

That is why a line clogging repeatedly is a physical problem rather than a usage problem, and why cabling it a fourth time is paying to treat a symptom. A camera tells you whether jetting solves it or a section needs repairing.

Sediment on the tank floor insulates the burner from the water, so the unit burns more gas to reach the same temperature while hot spots stress the glass lining. The anode rod — a sacrificial component that corrodes instead of your tank — gets consumed faster on hard water, and once it is gone the tank lining becomes the sacrificial metal.
