Polybutylene is dull gray, sometimes blue-gray or black. It bends by hand. It is typically half or three-quarter inch and usually stamped PB2110 along its length. What it is not: rigid copper with soldered joints, white or cream CPVC with glued joints, or modern PEX which is flexible but red, blue or white and stamped PEX.

Check more than one location. Partial repipes are common in this area and what is under the kitchen sink is frequently not what is in the bathroom wall.

And worth checking with your agent: some carriers rate homes with known polybutylene differently, and a few decline to write them.
