What the camera actually tells us
A sewer camera is a self-leveling head on a push rod with a transmitter in it. As it travels, we see the interior of the line, and a locator above ground picks up the transmitter so we know exactly where the head is and how deep. That means when we find a problem, we can mark it on your yard with paint, not with an estimate.
The distinction between problems matters enormously to your bill. Root intrusion through an otherwise intact joint might be solved with jetting and a maintenance interval. A single cracked section under a side yard is a spot repair — one small excavation, a couple of hours. A belly, where a length of pipe has settled and now holds standing water, requires re-bedding that section on proper base material. A total collapse, or a line that has lost its bottom over a long run, is a replacement.
Those four outcomes span a huge price range, and no honest person can tell you which one you have without looking. That is why we lead with the camera on every sewer call.

Clay, cast iron and the soil under Apache Junction
The two legacy materials under this town both fail in characteristic ways, and knowing which you have changes the approach. Vitrified clay is essentially fired ceramic — it does not corrode, and a clay line can be perfectly sound after seventy years. Its weakness is the joints, which were often packed with mortar or a bituminous compound. Our soil is not stable. Caliche layers and the expansive clays underneath move seasonally with moisture, and joints shift, open, and admit roots.
Cast iron fails differently. It rusts from the inside, and because effluent sits along the bottom, it corrodes there first. Run a camera down an old cast iron lateral and you will frequently see a pipe that looks intact on top and has no floor at all along the invert. That is not repairable with a liner in most cases; that section comes out.
Modern replacements go in as PVC or ABS with proper bedding and grade. Done correctly, a replacement lateral is genuinely a fifty-year fix — which is why we would rather do the right repair once than sell you three cleanings a year for a decade.
Cleanouts, and why the lack of one costs you money
A surprising number of older Apache Junction homes have no accessible exterior sewer cleanout. Every time a drain needs service, the plumber has to pull a toilet or work through a roof vent — extra labor on every single call, forever.
Installing a proper two-way cleanout near the foundation is not an expensive job on its own, and it pays for itself over a few service visits.
