Softening and filtration get talked about as if they are the same purchase and they are not. A softener removes hardness, which is a plumbing and appliance problem. A carbon filter removes chlorine, taste and odor, which is a drinking and showering problem. Neither substitutes for the other.

The order matters as much as the equipment. Sediment filtration first if needed, then carbon — placing carbon ahead of the softener is deliberate, because chlorine shortens resin life — then the softener, then any point-of-use polishing.

For drinking water, an under-sink reverse osmosis system behind a softener is the combination that actually solves both problems: the softener protects the plumbing, the RO handles dissolved solids at the tap. It is also the upgrade people notice most immediately, and running a line to the refrigerator for clear ice is straightforward at installation and considerably more work to retrofit.

A softener changes the interval on everything; it does not eliminate maintenance. Two items are worth putting on a calendar.

Flush the water heater annually. Even on softened water, sediment accumulates, and the flush only works while it is still loose — once it hardens into a crust on the tank floor, draining no longer removes it.

Check the anode rod every two to three years rather than the standard five. That rod exists to corrode instead of your tank, and once it is spent the tank lining becomes the sacrificial metal. It is a twenty-minute job that routinely adds years, and almost nobody does it.

Beyond that: clean aerators when flow drops at a single fixture, and replace multi-turn angle stops with quarter-turn ball valves before hard water seizes them. Both are inexpensive while somebody is already there and expensive as separate emergency visits.
