First, is your water actually hard enough to matter?

These get marketed as competing versions of the same thing. They are not.

A salt-based ion exchange softener physically removes calcium and magnesium, exchanging them for sodium on a resin bed and flushing the collected hardness to drain during regeneration. It is the only technology that truly softens water. You get soap lather, spot-free glassware, softer laundry, the slick feel in the shower, and full protection for a water heater or tankless unit. The trade-offs are real: you buy salt, it discharges brine, it uses some water to regenerate, and it adds a small amount of sodium.

A salt-free conditioner uses template-assisted crystallization to convert dissolved hardness into microscopic crystals that stay suspended and are less likely to bond to hot surfaces. It needs no salt, no drain and no power. It genuinely reduces scale in a water heater. What it does not do is remove hardness — so no lather, no laundry benefit, no spot-free dishes — and at the top of our hardness range, the scale reduction is partial rather than complete.

Our rule of thumb: if your goal is protecting equipment and salt or drainage is a genuine constraint, a conditioner is a legitimate choice. If your goal is soft water, only a softener delivers it.

Sizing is where most installations go wrong

An undersized softener is the single most common defect we find on units installed by someone else, and it is why plenty of people in this area believe softeners do not work.

Grain capacity has to be calculated from three inputs: your measured hardness, the number of people in the household, and average daily water use. A rough industry figure is 75 gallons per person per day. Multiply people by daily gallons by grains per gallon, and you get the daily hardness load the unit has to handle. A properly sized system regenerates roughly every three to seven days.

Get it wrong on the small side and the unit regenerates constantly, burns through salt, wastes water, and still lets hard water through toward the end of each cycle. Get it wrong on the large side and you have spent more than you needed to, and a badly oversized unit can sit too long between regenerations.

One more thing that matters: metered demand-initiated regeneration versus a timer head. A metered head regenerates when you have actually used the capacity. A timer regenerates on a schedule regardless. For snowbird households that sit empty for months, that difference is enormous.

The questions everyone asks

Will it taste salty? No. Ion exchange adds roughly 7.5 milligrams of sodium per quart for every grain of hardness removed. On 20-grain water that is about 150 mg per quart — less than a slice of bread, and not a detectable salty taste. If you are on a sodium-restricted diet or simply prefer to avoid it, potassium chloride is a drop-in substitute, or add an under-sink reverse osmosis system for drinking and cooking.

How much salt will I use? For a family of four on 20-grain water with a correctly sized metered unit, roughly one 40-pound bag a month. Burning through far more than that means the unit is undersized or running on a timer head.

Does it waste water? Regeneration uses water, typically 25 to 65 gallons per cycle depending on the unit. A metered system regenerating every four or five days uses a modest amount relative to household consumption, and less than the water you currently run down the drain waiting for scaled fixtures to perform.

Where does it go? After the main shutoff and pressure regulator, before the water heater, with a bypass valve for service. Exterior hose bibs should stay on untreated water — there is no reason to soften what goes on gravel.

When we tell people not to buy one

There are situations where a softener is the wrong first move, and we would rather say so.

If you are on a well with meaningful iron, a softener installed ahead of iron removal will foul its resin bed and lose capacity permanently — sometimes inside two years. Iron removal comes first, then softening. We have replaced resin that died exactly this way.

If your actual complaint is taste, odor or dissolved solids rather than scale, a softener does not address any of those. Carbon filtration handles taste and chlorine; reverse osmosis handles dissolved solids at the tap.

And if you are about to sell the house within a year, the return does not materialize in that window. Be honest with yourself about the horizon.
