Short answer

What the assemblies are and how they fail
The two you will encounter most on residential and light commercial property in this area are the pressure vacuum breaker and the reduced pressure zone assembly.
A pressure vacuum breaker protects against back-siphonage — the situation where a pressure drop in the main pulls water backward out of your irrigation. It is the common choice on residential irrigation and it must be installed above the highest point of the system it protects.
A reduced pressure zone assembly is the higher-hazard device, with two independent check valves and a relief valve between them. If either check fails, the relief valve dumps water to atmosphere rather than allowing backflow. That is why a continuously discharging RPZ is not a nuisance leak — it is the device telling you it has failed and doing exactly what it should.
In Arizona, the failure modes are mostly environmental. Hard water scales the check seats so they no longer seal. UV embrittles plastic components on above-ground installations. Debris from irrigation lines lodges in a check. And seized shutoffs on the assembly itself make testing impossible until they are replaced.
Pressure vacuum breaker (PVB)
Common on residential irrigation. Must sit above the highest downstream point.
Reduced pressure zone (RPZ)
Higher hazard applications. Discharges to atmosphere when a check fails — by design.
Double check assembly (DCA)
Used on some fire lines and lower-hazard connections.
Atmospheric vacuum breaker
Simplest device, no shutoffs downstream permitted. Not a testable assembly.
What the annual test involves
Testing is a short procedure with a calibrated differential pressure gauge. We isolate the assembly, connect to the test cocks, and verify each check valve holds against reverse flow and that the relief valve on an RPZ opens at the correct differential.
The whole thing takes well under an hour on an accessible assembly. Water to the downstream system is off during the test, which matters if we are testing an irrigation connection during a hot week — we schedule around watering days where we can.
If it passes, we complete the report and submit it to your water provider. If it fails, we tell you immediately what failed and what the repair costs, and in most cases we can rebuild it on the spot with a repair kit and retest the same visit rather than making you book twice.

Repair or replace
Most failures are rebuildable. Check valve rubber, springs and seats come as manufacturer repair kits, and a rebuild plus retest is considerably cheaper than a new assembly.
Replacement makes sense when the body itself is cracked or corroded, when the assembly is a model with no parts availability, when it was installed incorrectly in the first place — the wrong device for the hazard level, or a PVB mounted below the system it protects — or when repeated rebuilds are no longer holding.
On a replacement we also address the things that shorten assembly life here: a proper protective enclosure against UV and heat, correct height and orientation, and accessible shutoffs so next year's test does not require replacing valves before it can even start.

- Condition of the shutoffs
- Seized shutoff valves on the assembly have to be replaced before testing is even possible. Common on units over a decade old.
- Replacement scope
