Why Your AC Drain Line Keeps Clogging in Summer (And How to Fix It)
Your air conditioner produces gallons of water a day in monsoon humidity. When the small pipe carrying it away blocks, that water finds your ceiling instead.

The short answer
Your AC produces several gallons of condensate a day in monsoon humidity, and dust from the evaporator coil combines with it to form sludge in a warm, dark, permanently damp PVC line. When it blocks, water backs into the drain pan and comes through your ceiling.
Here is something most homeowners never learn until there is a stain on the ceiling: your air conditioner produces water. A lot of it. Warm humid air passing over a cold evaporator coil condenses moisture out of the air, and during Arizona monsoon humidity a residential system can produce several gallons a day.
That water leaves through a small PVC condensate line, typically running from the air handler through the attic to an exterior wall. It is an unglamorous half-inch or three-quarter-inch pipe that nobody thinks about — until it blocks.
When it blocks, water backs into the drain pan under the air handler, fills it, and comes through whatever is below. This is the most common summer HVAC call in this region, and it is almost entirely preventable.
Why the line blocks
Three things combine, and every one of them is worse in an Arizona summer.
First, dust. Your evaporator coil is a filter of last resort, and everything the air filter misses ends up on a wet, cold surface. That dust mixes with condensate and forms a sludge that moves into the drain line.
Second, biological growth. A condensate line is a warm, dark, permanently damp PVC pipe — an ideal environment for algae and biofilm. During monsoon months, when the line is carrying its heaviest water load, growth is fastest.
Third, design. Condensate lines run on gravity with minimal slope, and they are small in diameter. There is very little margin. A modest amount of sludge is enough to close one.
Why your AC shuts off "randomly"
If your system has been cutting out on hot days and then working again later, there is a good chance nothing is wrong with the air conditioner at all.
Most modern installations include a float switch in the drain pan or in the condensate line. When water rises because the drain has blocked, the float rises with it and interrupts the low-voltage control circuit, shutting the system down.
That is the switch doing exactly its job — it is choosing to stop cooling rather than let water come through your ceiling. So a system that shuts off in July is often protecting your drywall, and repeatedly resetting it is exactly the wrong response.
Worth knowing: float switches are sometimes disconnected by whoever was frustrated by one last summer. If yours has been bypassed, you have removed the only thing standing between a blocked drain and a ceiling repair.

What you can do yourself
Find the outdoor end of the condensate line first — usually a small PVC pipe stubbing out of an exterior wall, often near the condenser, sometimes dripping when the system runs. If the system has been running in humid weather and nothing is coming out of it, the line is blocked.
Turn the system off at the thermostat and at the breaker. Then attach a wet/dry vacuum to the outdoor end of the line, seal around it with a rag or duct tape, and run it for a couple of minutes. A surprising amount of sludge comes out this way, and this alone resolves a large share of blockages.
Then find the access tee near the air handler — a capped fitting on the drain line — and pour a cup of distilled white vinegar down it. Vinegar discourages the biological growth that caused the problem in the first place.
What not to do: do not pour bleach down it. Bleach is hard on the metal drain pan and the glued PVC joints over time, and the fumes in an enclosed attic are unpleasant. Vinegar does the job.
When to call somebody
If the vacuum does not clear it, the blockage is somewhere in the middle of the run and needs to be worked from both ends, sometimes with the line partially disassembled.
If there is already a water stain on a ceiling, the pan has overflowed and there are two problems: the drain and the reason the float switch did not stop it. Both need addressing.
If the drain pan is rusted through, water will not stay in it regardless of whether the line is clear. Pans are replaceable and it is worth doing before the season rather than after.
And if you find that the float switch has been disconnected, get it reconnected or replaced. It costs very little and it is the only automatic protection your ceiling has.
Preventing it next year
Clear the line every spring, before cooling season rather than during it. It is a fifteen-minute job in April and an emergency in July.
Put an algaecide tablet in the drain pan at the start of the season. They are inexpensive and they directly target the biofilm that causes blockages.
Change your air filter every one to three months during cooling season. Dust load in this environment is high, and less dust reaching the coil means less sludge in the drain.
Test the float switch annually — the simplest method is to add a small amount of water to the pan and confirm the system shuts down.
And have the evaporator coil cleaned as part of annual HVAC service. A cleaner coil produces less of the material that ends up in the drain.
